The Biggest Playground I've Ever Seen
If you ask me, I think humans make exploring way too complicated.
They have maps, traffic, schedules, and places they're trying to get to. Me? I just need my leash, my favorite human, and a nose that never gets tired.
I'm Ocean, and I'm five months old. That's basically a professional explorer in puppy years.
Every time we walk out the front door, I feel like I'm stepping into the biggest playground I've ever imagined. There are giant buildings that seem to touch the clouds, trees that somehow smell different every single day, and sidewalks filled with stories left behind by dogs I'll probably never meet. My dad thinks we're just going for a walk, but I know the truth, we're heading out on another expedition.
The first thing I notice isn't what I see.
It's what I smell.
Humans really miss out on a lot.
Every few steps there's something new. Fresh coffee drifting from somewhere nearby. Someone grilling lunch. Flowers blooming in the sunshine. Rain hiding in the wind before the clouds even arrive. A Labrador that walked by an hour ago. A tiny Chihuahua who thinks they're the king of the neighborhood. Squirrels that were definitely here five minutes ago...and if I keep sniffing long enough, maybe I'll figure out where they went.
My dad keeps saying, "Come on, Ocean."
Come on?
I just found twenty-seven different smells in one bush.
Give me a minute.
Well...maybe five.
Everything around me feels alive.
Cars zoom by with a giant whoosh that makes my ears perk up. Birds sing concerts from the trees like they're trying to impress everybody. Skateboards rattle across the sidewalks, buses rumble past like enormous dogs growling, and somewhere there's always music floating through the air. Sometimes I stop and just listen.
It's loud.
It's busy.
It's exciting.
The funny thing is...it used to make me a little nervous.
When you're only five months old, the world feels HUGE.
Everything is taller than you.
Everything is louder than you.
Everything moves faster than you.
But every adventure teaches me something new. Now those sounds don't feel scary anymore, they feel like the city saying, "Good morning, Ocean!"
Speaking of tall...
Have you ever looked up?
I mean REALLY looked up?
These buildings are enormous.
I have to lean my whole head back just to see the tops of them. The windows sparkle like giant mirrors, reflecting blue skies, fluffy clouds, and occasionally one very handsome puppy staring back at himself.
Yep...
Still handsome.
Still fluffy.
Still me.
My dad laughs every time I stop to admire my reflection.
I don't know why.
I'd stop for me too.
Then there are the parks.
Ohhhhh...the parks.
Now we're talking.
Wide open grass.
Cool shade under giant trees.
Tiny streams bubbling nearby.
Walking trails that seem to stretch forever.
Every stick looks like the greatest stick ever discovered.
Every leaf deserves to be chased.
Every butterfly clearly wants to race me.
I haven't won yet...
Mostly because they cheat and fly away.
The squirrels do the same thing.
Rude.
One day I'll catch one.
Probably.
Maybe.
Okay...probably not.
Being a mix of Siberian Husky, German Shepherd, and Bully means I think I inherited three different personalities.
My Husky side says...
"Let's see what's over there!"
My German Shepherd side says...
"Stay close to your dad."
And my Bully side?
"Excuse me...does that stranger look like they give really good belly rubs?"
The answer is usually yes.
I love meeting people.
Kids laugh when they see my floppy puppy ears.
Adults smile before they even reach me.
Some ask if they can pet me.
I wag my tail so hard I answer before my human does.
Every "Who's a good boy?" feels like winning a trophy.
Every ear scratch feels like magic.
Every new friend reminds me that adventures aren't just about places.
They're about people too.
Sometimes the weather changes without asking.
One minute it's bright and sunny.
The next minute raindrops start falling.
At first I thought rain meant we had to go home.
Now I know it just unlocks a whole new set of smells.
Wet grass.
Fresh dirt.
Cool sidewalks.
Tiny puddles.
Oh...
The puddles.
My dad tries so hard to walk around them.
I try just as hard to walk through every single one.
I don't know why humans don't appreciate puddles more.
They're basically tiny splash parks.
Sure...my paws get muddy.
Sure...I need a towel when we get home.
Worth it.
Every.
Single.
Time.
I still have so much left to discover.
There are trails I've never walked.
Parks I've never sniffed.
Friendly dogs I haven't met.
Sunsets I haven't watched.
Benches I haven't climbed on.
Treats I haven't tasted.
And probably thousands of squirrels that still think they're faster than me.
That's okay.
I'm not in a hurry.
I'm growing a little every day.
Getting braver every week.
Learning something new every time my paws hit the sidewalk.
Maybe that's what being a puppy is really about.
Not knowing exactly where you're going...
...but believing something amazing is waiting around every corner.
So tomorrow, when my leash jingles and my dad asks if I'm ready to go, I'll already be wagging my tail before the door even opens.
Because out there is another story waiting to be sniffed.
Another adventure waiting to happen.
Another memory waiting to be made.
And if you happen to see a fluffy puppy with bright blue eyes, giant ears, and a tail that never seems to stop wagging...
Come say hi.
I'll probably think we've been friends forever.
After all...
The world's a pretty big place.
But it feels a whole lot smaller when you greet everyone with a wag, an open heart, and a nose that's always chasing the next sensational adventure.
